UWG to Host GHSA Basketball Semifinals (2/28/2014)

The University of West Georgia will host the basketball semifinals for the Georgia High School Association on Saturday, March 1, 2014.  Doors will open at 2 p.m., and games will be held at 3:00, 4:45, 6:30 and 8:00 p.m.  All games will be held within the UWG Coliseum.

UWG Students Win in Atlanta and Chicago Design Competitions (2/26/2014)

Two University of West Georgia graphic design students recently were recognized for their work in national competitions. Carlton Roberts, a senior at UWG, recently won the Merit Award, one of six awards presented at the 5th Annual AIGA Atlanta Student Pin Up Show. Madison DeFilippis, also a senior at UWG, was one of 30 winners in the “Show Us Your POSTERior: International Student Poster Competition” in Chicago. A prestigious panel of professionals judged both competitions.

UWG Debate Team Among Top 10 Nationwide (2/21/2014)

The University of West Georgia varsity debate team, of junior Marquis Ard and sophomore Hakeem Muhammad, earned a first round at-large bid to participate in the 2014 National Debate Tournament. First round bids, voted on by a national selection committee, are based on regular season results and are only awarded to the top 16 teams in the country.

UWG Hosts Live Chat between NASA Experts and Local Students (2/17/2014)

On Thursday, February 20, 2014, the University of West Georgia will host local high school and middle school students for a live video chat with NASA experts. NASA Kennedy Space Center Education Professional Development, in conjunction with the former program NASA Explorer Schools, will introduce former astronaut, Col. Gregory H. Johnson, and science researcher, Dr. Michael Roberts. At 1:00 p.m., students will gather at UWG and have the opportunity to ask questions directly to Johnson and Roberts through a live web chat and Twitter feed.

Lincoln Exhibit Comes to UWG’s Ingram Library (2/10/2014)

The University of West Georgia will host the national traveling exhibit “Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, a Man for All Times” at UWG’s Ingram Library. The exhibit will start on Lincoln’s birthday, Feb. 12 and end on March 7. This free and public exhibit will include two programs on Lincoln’s life and legacy.

UWG Theatre Department Presents “Snapshot” (2/9/2014)

The University of West Georgia Theatre Department presents “Snapshot” Feb. 12- 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 15-16 at 2:30 p.m. There will also be a Community Preview on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. for a discounted ticket price of $3. Tickets for all other performances are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors. The show will run at the Townsend Center for Performing Arts.

UWG Receives $284,326 in Teacher Quality Grants (2/7/2014)

University of West Georgia received $284,326 in Teacher Quality grants to enhance the teaching of science, mathematics, language arts, reading and social studies at public and private elementary, middle and high schools. A total of 13 UWG professors in the College of Education and College of Science and Mathematics will use the funds, provided by Georgia’s Improving Teacher Quality Higher Education program, to strengthen and extend teachers’ content knowledge in their academic subjects with an emphasis on how deepened content knowledge has an impact on student learning and teaching practices.

Three UWG Faculty to Become Teaching Artists for NEA Initiative (2/5/2014)

Three University of West Georgia faculty members will participate as teaching artists in a National Endowment for the Arts funded initiative called Arts Engagement in American Communities. UWG’s Shelly Elman, professor of theatre, Jeremy Webb, technical director and adjunct instructor of theatre, and Stephanie Polhemus, instructor of theatre, will serve as teaching artists in the program, based out of Douglas County, Ga.

UWG Prepares for 29th Annual International Night (2/4/2014)

The University of West Georgia will celebrate the 29th Annual International Night on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, starting at 7:00 p.m. Dinner will begin when the doors open and entertainment will begin at 8:00 p.m. The event is hosted by and celebrates UWG’s International Student Club and its culturally diverse members. This year’s event theme is “World Wide Wolves.”
