Students Shine at Big Night (3/31/2008)

The University of West Georgia will host Big Night 2008 on Thursday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. A reception and exhibition will follow the event in the atrium of the Technology-enhanced Learning Center (TLC).

Dyson Delivers at Lecture Series (3/28/2008)

Dr. Michael Erik Dyson brought a standing-room-only crowd to the Campus Center Ballroom at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series. The celebrated author and scholar spoke for an hour about politics, love, honor and respect and received a standing ovation when he ended his oration.

Campus Raises Funds for Student (3/27/2008)

University of West Georgia faculty, staff and students are joining together to help raise funds for an Advanced Academy student who recently was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. An account has been opened at the Gilmer County Bank for donations.

New College of Education Dean Named (3/21/2008)

Dr. Kim K. Metcalf, who began his career as a high school music teacher, has accepted the position of dean of the College of Education effective July 1, 2008. Metcalf has been employed at West Georgia as director of The Evaluation Center in the COE since July 2006 and will serve as dean of the college after Dean Kent Layton completes his service on June 30.

FAFSA Night Helps Prospective Students (3/19/2008)

High school students and their families are invited to a Free Application for Financial Student Aid Night on Monday, March 24, from 5 – 7:30 p.m. at the University of West Georgia. The workshop will take place in the Technology-enhanced Learning Center, Room 1116, and is designed for high school seniors, UWG students and any citizen with a social security card.

Kids See Geology Demo (3/14/2008)

Holly Springs Elementary School fourth grade students enjoyed a field day learning about geology at the University of West Georgia. Dr. Randy Kath, professor of geology, helped the young visitorsunderstand the hydrologic cycle and how contaminants can seep into ground water.

MAP Hosts 24th Annual Awards Ceremony (3/12/2008)

Minority and international students at the University of West Georgia and local high school students will be recognized for their academic achievements at the 24th annual Academic Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, March 25, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. Jeffrey Turner, chief of police in Clayton County, will be the keynote speaker. The Multicultural Achievement Program will host the free event and the community is invited to attend.

Spring Commencement Times Set (3/5/2008)

West Georgia will conduct four spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 10. The Registrar’s Office estimates that 575 undergraduates and 110 graduate students will walk across the stage to receive a diploma.

Research Day 2008 is fast approaching and will show off the efforts of undergraduate students putting forth that extra energy into their studies. Debate Team Goes to Nationals (3/5/2008)

The University of West Georgia Debate Team has qualified for the 2008 National Debate Tournament for the 36th consecutive year, the fifth longest streak in the nation. Only Harvard University, Dartmouth College, the University of Kansas and the University of Southern California have longer streaks.
