Georgia has 71,000 miles of rivers and lakes, and each one is feeling the strain. This has resulted in a laundry list of complaints and inconveniences for most people, and drought stresses have only exacerbated tensions caused by steadily increasing usage demands on water resources in the Southeast.

Speaker Tom Murphy Exhibit (5/28/2008)

The Irvine Sullivan Ingram Library at the University of West Georgia and the Georgia Humanities Council will host an opening reception for a new exhibit “Speaker Tom Murphy: Steady Leadership in Changing Times” with guest speaker former Georgia Representative Tracy Stallings on Sunday, May 4, at 2:30 p.m. at the Neva Lomason Library. The event is free and the community is invited to attend.

Publications and Printing Wins Excellence Awards (5/27/2008)

The Department of Publications and Printing, a division of University Advancement, won eight Print Excellence Awards in the state’s annual Printing Industry Association of Georgia competition.

UWG Receives Infrastructure Funding (5/22/2008)

Governor Sonny Perdue approved an appropriation of $1.9 million by the Georgia General Assembly in the 2009 state budget for road and bridge infrastructure to connect the current campus of the University of West Georgia to a gift of approximately 250 acres of land donated by the City of Carrollton.

A messy room usually won’t win acclaim and prizes but for University of West Georgia sophomore Terence Rushin, his nightmare room became a dream after it won top prize in a Room Renovators contest sponsored by GoalQuest.

Alum Receives Woodruff Fellowship (5/19/2008)

University of West Georgia alumna Vicki White, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 2000 and a Master of Science degree in nursing in 2005, received a Woodruff Leadership Academy Fellowship from Emory University.

Library Renovation to Recreate Murphy Office (5/16/2008)

During the 2008 legislative session, the Georgia General Assembly chose to honor the memory of the late Speaker of the House Thomas B. Murphy by appropriating $8 million in the 2009 state budget to fund a library renovation at the University of West Georgia that will feature the reconstructed office of Speaker Murphy. Governor Sonny Perdue supported the tribute by signing the 2009 budget with this project intact.

IMPACT Grant to Promote Science, Math Programs (5/16/2008)

The Alice Huffard Richards Fund granted $100,000 for one year for IMPACT (Improving Motivation, Performance and Attitudes of Children and Teachers) for Science and Mathematics. At the end of the first year, an evaluation will determine if the grant will be renewed for two-year cycles at $100,000 per year for a possible funding of up to $300,000. The grant will be administered through the Community Foundation of West Georgia.

International Exchange Program Visits Japan (5/14/2008)

UWG faculty members are on an education mission in Japan this month. One of the many objectives of the delegation is to visit Kagoshima University in Kagoshima, Japan, and continue the university’s International Exchange Program with Kagoshima faculty and students. Dr. Bill Schaniel, professor of economics and director of International Programs, is coordinating the journey.

Dr. Tim Chowns, professor of geology, received the Distinguished  Scholar Award, the highest honor the College of Arts and Sciences bestows upon a faculty member.

Wonder Walkers Raise Over $8,000 (5/14/2008)

The American Cancer Society and Carroll County teamed up to host the 15th annual Carroll County Relay for Life. The University of West Georgia helped sponsor the event and the 26-member team of UWG faculty and staff, the UWG Wonder Walkers, and raised $8,932.11 for the American Cancer Society. Altogether, the county’s Relay for Life raised approximately $200,000 for the American Cancer Society.

University Remains Open in Wake of Storm (5/12/2008)

The University of West Georgia campus will be open today as clean-up from Sunday's storms continues. Damage is still being assessed on the UWG campus with an estimated 200 trees down and minor damage to campus facilities being reported.

Arrest Made in Arson Case (5/9/2008)

The University of West Georgia Police Department announced that an arrest was made on May 8 for an arson that occurred in a campus residence hall, Downs Hall, on February 13.

Professor, Graduate Receive National Recognition (5/8/2008)

Educational excellence in a personal environment at the University of West Georgia is demonstrated in many ways including a collaboration that garnered national attention this year. Dr. Philip Novack-Gottshall, assistant professor of geosciences, and UWG graduate Adam Lanier of Carrollton, published their research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.
