Officials from the University of West Georgia remain in contact with state and local public health departments regarding the outbreak of the H1N1 influenza virus (commonly known as swine flu) and will notify the campus of any changes or recommendations coming from state agencies.

Honor students in an education course at UWG teamed up with Carroll County officials to provide an intervention for youths who have come before a juvenile court judge.

Summer is just kicking off, but it won’t be long until players, coaches and fans will be gearing up to kick off another football season at the University of West Georgia. And this coming season, the Wolves football program takes a major step forward with the opening of a new on-campus stadium that is generating excitement throughout the UWG athletics community.

A ceremony paying tribute to the late Carson Pritchard’s contributions to the campus community was hosted at the University Suites, a residential hall for students located on the site of the original Pritchard and Roberts Halls.

The acting vice president for Academic Affairs at the University of West Georgia is now Dr. Sandra Stone, formerly the interim director of the Applied Research Center at Southern Polytechnic State University.

The University of West Georgia announces the creation of the Marion L. Fisher Award, established by Carrollton resident Douglass M. Fisher to honor and remember her husband, Marion L. Fisher, who died in January. The Fishers discussed the idea shortly before Marion’s death in order to support rising juniors and seniors majoring in English.

The University of West Georgia announces the creation of the Carole E. Scott M.B.A. Scholarship Endowment Fund, established by Dr. Carole E. Scott to benefit graduate students in the Richards College of Business’ MBA program.

The University of West Georgia will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, and will reopen on Tuesday, May 26, at 8 a.m. 

The University of West Georgia announces the creation of the Miss Michele May and Dr. Nancy Ellen Pollard Scholarship, which will benefit graduate students majoring in special education.

One way the University of West Georgia celebrates its graduate students is by recognizing their achievements. David Champa, a West Georgia alumnus and a non-traditional student, received the Albert S. Hanser Graduate Paper award from the Department of History this spring.

The University of West Georgia will offer IMPACT summer workshops that teach children science and mathematics in a fun and entertaining way through the Department of Continuing Education.

Dr. Charles “Skip” Clark has been named the new dean to the Graduate School at the University of West Georgia. Clark has served as interim dean of the school since July 2006 and as chair of the Department of History for five years.

The University of West Georgia and the College of Education will host its annual Learning Festival on Wednesday and Thursday, June 3-4 at the Education Center. The festival is free and the community is invited to attend.

The University of West Georgia conducted the largest commencement ceremony in its history on Saturday with almost 850 graduate and undergraduate students receiving diplomas.

The University of West Georgia is privileged to announce the establishment of the Robert Ray and Bula Adams Claxton Memorial Scholarship. Dr. Robert H. Claxton, professor emeritus of history at UWG, created the scholarship to honor his parents, Robert Ray and Bula Adams Claxton.

The 2009 Atlanta Area Bibliographic Instruction Group or BIG Conference will be held at the University of West Georgia on Friday, May 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. The registration for “The Learning Commons:  New Frontiers in Instruction” is free with a deadline of Friday, May 22.

The University of West Georgia will conduct Spring Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 9, in the UWG Coliseum on campus.  Undergraduates for the College of Arts and Sciences and the Richards College of Business will receive their degrees at the 9 a.m. ceremony.  Undergraduates for the College of Education and the School of Nursing, as well as all students receiving graduate degrees from the Graduate School, will march at the noon ceremony.

University of West Georgia graduate and Osborne High School Principal Steve Miletto has been named 2009 Principal of the Year by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals.
