A group of faculty members from the University of West Georgia's College of Science and Mathematics and College of Education received a major grant entitled “University of West Georgia Institutional STEM Excellence (UWise)” from the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents. The award is for more than $344,000 and takes effect for a year, beginning July 1, with a potential to renew multiple years.

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) approved a policy change designed to further enhance postsecondary completion in Georgia. The change will allow additional courses from the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) to transfer to all of the USG’s 35 degree-granting institutions.

The Board of Regents, the 18-member governing body for the University System of Georgia, has elected Regent Benjamin “Ben” J. Tarbutton III to a six-month term as the Board’s Chair. Tarbutton, who was appointed in January 2006 to the Board of Regents by Gov. Sonny Perdue representing the Twelfth Congressional District, will serve as Board Chair from July 1, 2011, through December 31, 2011.

Through a joint effort between the Ingram Library and the College of Social Sciences, the University of West Georgia has recently joined The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research for the 2011-2012 academic school year. The ICPSR will grant all faculty, staff, and students full access via any campus computer to this research data archive that contains more than 7,500 research studies.

The economy may still be running slow, but the University of West Georgia continues to be a powerful engine. UWG contributed $410 million to the region’s economy during the 2010 fiscal year, according to a newly released report. In 2009 UWG contributed $364 million to the region’s economy.
