Beloved UWG faculty member Dr. William C. Schaniel is retiring after 33 years of service at the university. Family, friends, faculty and staff members gathered together on Wednesday, June 26, to celebrate Schaniel’s longtime commitment to the university.

UWG’s University Bookstore listed in 2012 “Build Georgia” Awards (6/27/2013)

The University of West Georgia bookstore can add “award-winning” to its long list of attributes according to the Georgia Chapter of Associated General Contractors of America. At the 2012 annual conference, R.K. Redding Construction, the construction manager for the bookstore, received a “Build Georgia” Merit Award for their work on the project. LP3 Architecture served as architect for the bookstore.

Local Math and Science Teachers visit UWG for Professional Development (6/27/2013)

Ninety local in-service teachers visited the University of West Georgia from June 10 – 21 for professional development training as part of the Science and Math Institutes for Teacher Education. Dr. Bob Powell, UWG Professor and Chair of Physics and Director of the West Georgia Observatory, is the Director of the project.

Suicide Prevention Training Provides Signs and Risk Factors for Suicide (6/26/2013)

The University of West Georgia held a free suicide prevention training session on Tuesday to provide attendees with the warning signs and risk factors for suicide. The training was a collaborative event between the Counseling and Career Development Center and the College of Education Department of Clinical and Professional Studies under the PREVENT@UWG Mental Health Outreach Program.

The University of West Georgia held the first Volunteer Trail Day on June 19, 2013, in an effort to get students involved with maintaining the nature trails that run through campus. The Department of University Recreation coordinated the event.

UWG Staff Member Shares Weight Loss Journey (6/21/2013)

Malissa Lowe, 40, a University of West Georgia staff member, began her weight loss journey in June of 2011 and has lost a total of 160 pounds. After being diagnosed with high blood pressure, Lowe decided to make a lifestyle change for her health.

UWG’s Center for Public History Receives $35,600 Grant (6/19/2013)

The Center for Public History at the University of West Georgia recently received a $35,600 grant from the Callaway Foundation to support the West Georgia Textile Heritage Trail. The funds will be used to support the publication of a photography book on the textile industry in northwest Georgia and a conference on the importance of textile history and heritage tourism in this region.

University of West Georgia graduate student, Johnny Holloway, is a quarterfinalist for the U.S. 2013 Grammy's Music Educator Award. The award is presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation.

Sexton named NCBWA All-American (6/6/2013)

The summer has started off with a bang for the ace of the 2013 UWG pitching staff, as Jamie Sexton led his summer ball team, the Winchester Royals of the Valley Baseball League in Virginia, to a victory on opening night last Friday. But that was the tip of the iceberg, as Sexton was named Honorable Mention All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

UWG Alumna Named Police Chief at Berkeley (6/4/2013)

Margo Akers Bennett, a University of West Georgia alumna, was recently named University of California at Berkeley’s new police chief. Bennett attended and graduated from UWG with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and criminal justice in 1977 and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling in 1981.
