UWG Yearbooks Go Digital (7/31/2013)

The Irvine S. Ingram Library at the University of West Georgia, with support from the office of Development and Alumni Relations, has digitized and made available online the college’s yearbooks and student handbooks, including publications from the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School, as well as two memoirs. Subsidized by a grant from the Sloan Foundation, in collaboration with the LYRASIS Digitization Collaborative, the publications can be viewed online in their entirety at: http://archive.org/details/universityofwestgeorgia.

600 Students Graduate from UWG at Summer Commencement (7/30/2013)

Graduates, family, friends and honored guests arrived at the University of West Georgia Coliseum on Saturday, July 27, to celebrate the 2013 Summer Commencement. Dr. Kyle Marrero, UWG’s new president, served as master of ceremonies in his first commencement since taking office in July 2013.

UWG’s IMPACT Program Hosts Summer Camp with Boys and Girls Club (7/29/2013)

The University of West Georgia is working with the Boys and Girls Club of Carrollton to increase excitement and knowledge in the fields of science and mathematics. In June 2013, UWG’s IMPACT grant, which stands for Improving Motivation, Performance, and Attitudes of Children and Teachers, or IMPACT, partially funded approximately 100 members of the Boys and Girls Club of Carrollton to participate in a two-week program for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

On-Sale Date Announced for Florida Georgia Line (7/25/2013)

The University of West Georgia has announced that tickets for the Florida Georgia Line concert will go on sale to the general public on Aug. 16, 2013, at 10 a.m. The concert, part of the HERE’S TO THE GOOD TIMES TOUR 2013 and also featuring Colt Ford and Tyler Farr, is scheduled for Oct. 23, 2013, at the UWG Coliseum. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased at the Townsend Center box office, online at www.townsendcenter.org, or by calling 678.839.4722.

UWG’s Commencement Ceremony will Broadcast Live on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (7/25/2013)

The University of West Georgia’s summer commencement ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 27, at UWG’s Coliseum. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will also be available online on the UWG website.

National Association of Health Underwriters’ Award Goes to UWG Alum (7/24/2013)

University of West Georgia alumnus and Atlanta Association of Health Underwriters member David Knight recently received the Distinguished Service Award at the National Association of Health Underwriters’ 83rd Annual Convention and Exhibition held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Atlanta.

UWG Ranked as 12th Most Affordable Online College (7/22/2013)

Affordable Colleges Online recently released the Most Affordable Online College Degree Programs ranking, naming the University of West Georgia as 12th nationally. Thousands of colleges were analyzed and the top 54 with the most affordable online programs were ranked.

UWG Trio Named to Preseason All-America Team (7/22/2013)

Three UWG Wolves football standouts have added to the team’s list of preseasons accolades for the upcoming 2013 football season. Offensive tackle Brandon White, guard William Wright and linebacker Bobby Liggins have been named members of the 25th Annual USA College Football Division II Preseason All-Americans.

Veterans Share Stories with Community at Just Listening Circle (7/19/2013)

The University of West Georgia’s College of Social Sciences is partnering with Veterans Heart Georgia, an Atlanta-based non-profit organization, to introduce a veteran-focused “Just Listening” circle to Carrollton, Ga. The community-based initiative brings local veterans and community members together to “just listen” to veterans share their stories.

The University of West Georgia College of Arts and Humanities hosted a farewell reception for Tommy Cox, UWG director of the School of the Arts and professor of theatre, on Friday, July 12. Cox is leaving the University of West Georgia to pursue a career as the theatre director at Carroll County High School.

UWG Hosts Panel Discussion on Innovation in Business and Beyond (7/18/2013)

The University of West Georgia Alumni Association and the Richards College of Business will host a panel discussion titled “Innovation in Business and Beyond” on Tuesday, August 6. The event will be held at the Buckhead Club in Atlanta from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The panel will consist of four top business professionals including Missy Dugan, Tim Houlne, Greg Schulenburg and Stuart Thorn.

2013 UWise Summer Bridge Program Underway at UWG (7/17/2013)

In preparation for fall 2013, approximately 40 students enrolled in the University of West Georgia’s UWise Summer Bridge Program. During this four-week program, which concludes on July 26, 2013, the students will earn six college credit hours in two courses.

Richards College of Business Offers Free GMAT Preparation Course (7/17/2013)

The Richards College of Business will offer free a GMAT preparation course for applicants to its Master of Business Administration and Master of Professional Accounting programs. The course includes four sessions to be held on September 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Students must attend all four sessions which will be located in Adamson Hall, room 227, at the University of West Georgia’s Carrollton campus.

Football Season Tickets Available to General Public (7/16/2013)

The 2013 UWG football season is right around the corner, with the home opener set to commence in less than two months on Sept. 14 against Miles College. Monday, the University of West Georgia opened up 2013 season ticket sales to the general public.

College of Social Sciences Wins Second Place in 2013 People’s Parade (7/16/2013)

Though rain postponed the 2013 People’s Parade, thousands of people lined the Carrollton streets for the rescheduled July 13 event. More than 100 groups entered vehicles and floats including the University of West Georgia and its College of Social Sciences. The College of Social Sciences’ ten-foot-tall picnic basket entry, with gingham lining and American flags waving, won second place for the large business category.

UWG Announces Fall Concert Headliner Florida Georgia Line (7/15/2013)

Over the past year, Florida Georgia Line has cherished the good times seeing their QUADRUPLE PLATINUM debut single “Cruise” dominate Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart at No. 1 for 19 straight weeks, the longest stretch for any song in the past 50 years and their aptly titled, GOLD-certified Republic Nashville debut HERE’S TO THE GOOD TIMES top the Billboard Country Albums Chart. UWG Alum Qualifies for National Bowling Team (7/12/2013)

University of West Georgia alumnus David Johnson was recently named a qualifier for the United States Virgin Islands National Bowling Team. Johnson currently lives in St. Croix and is a partner at Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP, a management consulting company specializing in management consulting, risk management and scorecard development.

UWG’s Regional Economic Impact Totals to $442 Million (7/11/2013)

According to an annual study by the University System of Georgia, the University of West Georgia had a regional economic impact totaling to over $442 million in fiscal year 2012. This amount in spending by UWG and its students is a significant increase from last year’s $418 million. FY 2012 marks the fifth year of UWG’s continued annual impact growth.

The UWG Legacy Continues in the Peachtree Road Race T-Shirt Competition (7/11/2013)

For the past three years, UWG has managed to dominate the AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt Design Competition. This year was no exception. Justin Dunbar, a spring 2013 UWG graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art education, won first place in the competition where his design was unveiled on Thursday, July 4, at the 44th AJC Peachtree Road Race.
