Laptop Mac Address

Recently in one of our ‘Security Tips’ we have addressed laptop safety. In addition to that valuable information, we would like inform you that we can track a laptop that is in use on our UWG network in the event of it being stolen. However, it is important to know that this is only if the following information is available to you to provide to ITS. While we don’t have the habit of doing this, it can be a tool for us to help trace-stolen property. The only way for us to do it is if we have a laptop’s ‘physical address’ also known as a ‘MAC’ address (Media Access Control.) It is a good idea to make a note of your MAC address and store it in a safe location that you can get to if your laptop is stolen from you. By safe location, we mean somewhere away from your laptop (don't tape it to the machine!), in a place away from prying eyes, that you can remember. To retrieve a computer’s address, follow these steps:

If a laptop is stolen from you on our campus, please contact the University Police immediately. The 24-hour emergency phone number is 678-839-6000. To get in touch with ITS, please call the IT Service Desk at 678-839-6587 or email information toservicedesk@westga.edu. You will be put in touch with the people who can help trace your machine on our network.
