Setting up Microsoft Outlook with SSL-IMAP

This page is based on Outlook 2003 (11.6568.6568) SP2

Note that this page does not describe setting up outlook for use with the UWG faculty-staff email server. For that, click here.


  
  1. Go to the Tools menu and click on E-mail accounts...

  2. Choose Add a new email account
  3. Click Next
  4. Select IMAP
  5. Click Next

  6. Under User information, fill in your real name and email address in the form username@my.westga.edu.
  7. Under Server information fill in my.westga.edu. 
  8. Also under Server information, fill in the name of the outgoing mail server. This should be my.westga.edu
  9. Under Logon information, fill in the username that you use to log in to myUWG.

  10. You may enter your password if you wish, but it is not required. If you don't enter your password here, you will be prompted for it when you check or send email.
  11. Click on the More Settings... button.
  12. Click on the Outgoing Server tab.
  13. Click on the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication checkbox.
  14. Use same settings as your incoming mail server; i.e. your myUWG login name and password.
  15. Make sure Log on using Secure Password Authentication is not checked. The password you send is still secure, thanks to the SSL tunnel that IMAP is using.

  16. Click on the advanced tab.
  17. Select the This server requires an encrypted connection checkbox under Incoming server(IMAP). The default port of 993 is correct.
  18. Select the This server requires an encrypted connection checkbox under Outgoing server(SMTP). Change the port to 465.

  19. Click OK
  20. Click Next
  21. Click Finish.

That's it. You should be ready to go.
