iPhone Email

Apple's iPhone comes with a built in email client. Use the directions below to configure Mail to access your myUWG email.

If you chose automatic sync during setup and use a supported email client, your existing email accounts should already be set up and ready to go. You may also set up iTunes to manually sync your email accounts or configure your email accounts directly on your iPhone.

Method 1: Setting Up Your Account Through iTunes

You may set up your iPhone Mail automatically by syncing it with your email client on your desktop computer. iTunes syncing supports Apple Mail and Microsoft Entourage on a Mac or Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express on Windows. If you use another email client, this method will not work. You will need to configure your iPhone directly.

Note: Syncing an email account to iPhone copies the email account setup, not the messages themselves.

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer using the provided dock and/or cable.
  2. Open iTunes on your desktop computer.
  3. Select your iPhone under Devices in the left pane of iTunes.
  4. Click the Info tab for your iPhone in the main window of iTunes.
  5. Scroll down to Mail Accounts.
  6. Select your myUWG email account and click the "Sync selected Mail Accounts" check box.
  7. Click the Sync button in iTunes to sync your iPhone and copy the email account setup.
This will copy all the settings including your password if it is saved on your computer.

Method 2: Setting Up An Email Account on Your iPhone (2.0)

You will need to be connected to the Internet via WiFi or the AT&T Network (Edge or 3G) to complete this process. The screen shots were taken from iPhone 2 software.

Although the iPhone Mail supports POP, we recommend using IMAP. POP works best when you only check email from one computer or device.

  1. If this is the first account you are setting up on iPhone, tap Mail. Otherwise, skip to Step 2.
  2. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
Note, your Settings may be on another screen if you have moved it.

  3. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars

  4. Under Accounts, tap Add Account...

  5. Tap Other

  6. In the New Account window tap Name and type in your Full Name
  7. Tap the Address field and type in your myUWG email address.
  8. Tap the Password field and type in your myUWG ID password.
  9. Tap the Description field to change the description name if you wish. (Optional)
  10. Tap the Save button.

  11. Tap IMAP

  12. Under Incoming Mail Server, tap the Host Name field and type in my.westga.edu
  13. Tap the User Name field and type in your myUWG ID
  14. The password should be filled in for you from the previous screen.

  15. Touch and scroll to the Outgoing Mail Server section.
  16. Tap the Host Name field and type in my.westga.edu
  17. Tap the User Name field and type in your myUWG ID
  18. Tap the Password field and type in your myUWG ID password
  19. Tap the Save button at the top of the screen.

  20. Mail will verify your settings by connecting to the server. You will need to have a WiFi or AT&T Edge Internet connection.

Tip: iPhone Mail requires saving your password. Anyone who has access to your iPhone may read and send email on your behalf. You may want to consider turning on Passcode Lock. This will require typing in the passcode each time you turn on your iPhone. While this may seem inconvenient, it will help protect your email and other iPhone data if your iPhone is lost or stolen.

Checking Your Mail
  1. Tap the Home button on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Mail icon in the lower pane.

  3. Mail will download your incoming messages into your Inbox.
If you have multiple accounts, you may have to select it by going back to the Accounts menu. Do this by clicking the button at the top left of the screen (shown as someone@my.westga.edu in the image below) until you get to your accounts.

  4. Tap the message you want to read in your Inbox.
  5. Your other IMAP Mailboxes are available by tapping the account name button in the top left of the screen. (Shown as someone@my.westga.edu in the image above.)

Troubleshooting Tip

ITS requires SSL connections for IMAP and SMTP connections. By default, the iPhone uses SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption for IMAP and SMTP. If you are getting a password incorrect error, your password may be entered in wrong or you may have SSL turned off. You may verify the SSL settings by:

  1. Go to Home > Settings > Mail > Accounts
  2. Tap on your myUWG Account
  3. Scroll down and tap on Advanced
  4. Under Settings, verify that Incoming Uses SSL and Outgoing Uses SSL are both turned ON and that the ports are 993 (IMAP) and 465 (SMTP).
