UWG Residential Phone Service
UWG's residential phone service is a Nortel PBX service implemented by BellSouth Business Systems with the connectivity to the Public Telephone Network provided by Synchronet who is partnering with ITC/DeltaCom. To utilize your phone service simply connect your phone set to the blue jack in your room and check for the dial tone. Your phone number should have been provided to you by the Residence Life office, but all residence hall phone numbers start with 678-839-XXXX.
- For off-campus local calls, dial "8" before the 10 digit phone number. (Area codes 770,404 & 678 are local calls. Most 706 area codes are local as well.)
- For on-campus calls to other residence hall rooms, dial the last 5 digits of the phone number (i.e. the first digit to press is a 9 then the remaining 4 digits).
- UWG has converted most all administrative and instructional on-campus phone lines over to the new PBX. All UWG PBX phone lines can be called from any on-campus phone by dialing the last 5 digits.
- Local calling and toll-free calls are free for students. Local calling includes all numbers in the 770, 404 & 678 areas codes as well as most numbers in the 706 area code.
- No long distance service is included. It is recommended that students use cell phones or calling cards for long distance calling.
- Each bedroom is assigned a phone number and voice mail box which is shared when there are two occupants.
- Phone service includes caller id, call waiting, call forwarding (to activate, dial #1 and then the target number; to deactivate call forwarding, dial #1), and a new voice mail service (Nortel CallPilot).
- "No" answering machines are needed. Residence Life should provide handouts on how to utilize this new voice mail service. Please note that when someone leaves a voice mail for a resident hall room then the resident will hear a stuttered dial tone when they pick up their phone. This should not be confused with a busy signal. Just dial as you would as if you have a normal dial tone.
- Each dual occupancy dorm room is equipped with two blue RJ45 phone jacks.
-
Report phone line problems to your RA. Phone set repairs/replacements are the resident's responsibility. For a phone line with a problem, please report:
- If it is found that a phone line does not have dial tone, please have the occupant determine if there is "air" sound or if it is totally "dead". By "air", it is meant there is an absence of dial tone when taking the phone set off-hook; but if a key on the phone is depressed, a tone sound is heard and usually you can hear a faint background noise (i.e. air). Also please note that a stuttered dial tone means the occupant has an unread voice mail message.
- If the phone number is believed to be incorrect, please call a phone number with CallerID and report that number when reporting that it is an incorrect phone number problem. Remember that resident hall occupants on the PBX have to dial an "8" now to get an outside line and not a "9" anymore.
Sharing a phone line
Sharing a phone line doesn't sound too complicated, but it can be if you're not careful. Be sure to discuss phone usage with your roommate. The following topics should be addressed.
- How late is too late to receive phone calls?
- How long is considered too long on the phone?
- Where should messages be left/recorded?
- When should messages be erased/discarded?
Telephone Troubleshooting Tips
- If no dial tone, disconnect ALL cables from the blue jacks including caller id units, answering machines and dial up modems. Test EACH of your phone jacks by checking for a dial tone with a phone set and a cable which WORK on a neighbor's phone jack. If there is still no dial tone, report the problem to your RA or RLC.
- If you can make calls but cannot receive calls, try cancelling call forwarding. To do this, pick up the phone and verify the dial tone. Then dial #1 to cancel the forwarding.
-
For harassing phone calls, follow the procedures required for filing a complaint with UWG Public Safety. If the call tracing service is required, Public Safety will need to initiate that request.
