WinSCP and other SFTP Software

Why SFTP instead of FTP?

At UWG SFTP is used to transfer files for security reasons. If you are publishing to the student web server OR if you are publishing from OFF-CAMPUS, a secure connection is MANDATORY.

What does UWG recommend?

WinSCP is probably the most common software used to transfer files here at UWG. WinSCP is free and capable of a secure connection using SSH. Most UWG lab computers feature WinSCP. To download a copy of WinSCP, click here. (WinSCP is only available for Windows. For more information about WinSCP, visit http://winscp.net/eng/index.php.)

What about Dreamweaver?

If you're using Macromedia Dreamweaver, compatible publishing software is built in and there is no need to download a separate client. However, please be sure to configure Dreamweaver for a secure connection.

What about Mozilla or Netscape Composer?

While you're free to CREATE or EDIT your webpages with these clients, you will need to ignore their built in publishing options and use a separate "stand-alone" SFTP software to publish your files.

A few "stand alone" programs which support a secure FTP connection using SSH are listed in the table below. You may click on the name of the client to visit their link.
