Information Literacy Curriculum for First Year Programs

ENGL 1101

Learning Outcomes:

  • Contextualize the process of research in order to understand its importance and purpose in their personal and academic lives

  • Explore the organization and functionality of a database in order to use it effectively in academic research

  • Distinguish between popular and scholarly sources in order to select appropriate sources for information need

  • Identify the relevant parts of the information cycle in order to select appropriate sources to fulfill their information need

Lesson Plan:

First Year Writing faculty will have access to an online instructor’s toolbox that they can use to incorporate information literacy into their curriculum. We will also provide faculty with assignments that they can assign to their courses (and will be graded by IS GAs.) We will supplement these materials with optional face to face workshops on specific tools and topics geared towards first year students as well as online instruction modules.

ENGL 1102

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify keywords in order to construct efficient searches for information

  • Understand the organization and functionality of a subject-specific database (MLA)  in order to effectively narrow their searches and find relevant information.

  • Analyze information resources in order to decide how to integrate their research findings into their work.

Lesson Plan:

IS Faculty will work with First Year English faculty to embed information literacy into the ENGL 1102 curriculum. This will involve creating an online IL toolkit for faculty and IS faculty providing in person training sessions on how to use the toolkit to create assignments. Like 1101, we will offer optional face to face workshops on specific tools and topics geared towards first year students.
