Learning Support FAQs
Below are the most frequently asked questions regarding enrollment in Learning Support courses and other academically-related issues. For additional information, be sure to ask your learning support instructor or contact the Learning Support Office (678-839-6435).
Please don't take a chance with your success at West Georgia by being unwilling to ask questions and subsequently ending up confused and potentially in academic difficulty. Truly, the only “stupid” question is the one that isn't asked.
- May I withdraw from a learning support course if it isn't going well?
- May I withdraw from courses that aren't learning support?
- What happens if I stop going to class?
- When will I preregister for the next semester?
- What happens if I don't preregister for the next semester?
- What happens if I don't do well this semester?
- May I take eCore classes even if I'm in learning support?
- When can I declare my major?
- Can the learning support office answer financial aid questions?
- Why can't I register myself on BANWEB?
-
Who is my new best friend while I'm in learning support?
YOU'VE READ THE QUESTIONS; HERE ARE THE ANSWERS:
- Learning Support students are NOT eligible to withdraw from a required learning support course unless they are withdrawing completely from school OR have only LS courses on their schedules and will keep at least one of the LS classes but drop the other LS class.
- With the permission of the Learning Support office, LS students are eligible to withdraw from regular academic classes as long as the withdrawal is done prior to the deadline. The deadline date is around midterm, and the official date is always published in the "Scoop." Withdrawing officially results in a grade of “W” being assigned for that class. Although the “W” grade does not negatively affect your overall grade point average, it can definitely impact your financial aid status. If you receive financial aid, be sure you know exactly the impact that a “W” grade will have on your record before withdrawing.
- If you stop going to class (and have NOT officially withdrawn), then it’s very likely that you will receive a grade of “F” in regular academic courses and a grade of “U” in your learning support courses. In these cases, suspension from the university is likely. If there are circumstances affecting your attendance (job changes, problems at home, etc.), please talk to Mrs. Taylor to see if something can be worked out which won’t adversely affect your academic career.
- Preregistration for each semester is done according to a schedule predetermined by the Registrar’s Office. Registration is by the last two digits of the SS# (not Student ID). Students in learning support will receive information about the available dates and times for advisement several weeks before preregistration actually begins. In addition, the instructors will post the schedule in the classrooms and on their office doors. Preregistration is a wonderful opportunity to get a class schedule providing more options than if you wait until the last minute. Learning support students are advised and registered at the same time.
- If you don’t preregister for the next semester, (1) you lose out on the best selection of classes, (2) you must wait until the start of the semester to fight for available spaces, and (3) you pay a $75 late fee. Is it worth it? NO.
- According to the Learning Support policies and procedures, a student who in any semester (even the very first one) earns two “U” grades, two “F” grades, or a combination of “U” and “F” grades is automatically suspended. Unless there are extenuating circumstances that affected your academic status, the suspension generally means that you attend another institution or sit out a year before returning to West Georgia. There is a limit to the number of attempts a person can receive in order to exit the program and a limit to the number of academic hours that can be earned prior to exiting the program. Students at the limit of their attempts and/or coursework are notified in writing.
- Learning Support students are eligible to take eCore classes provided the eCore class does not have the learning support requirement as a prerequisite. For example, you can’t take eCore MATH 1111 until MATH 0097-0099 have been exited. Remember that eCore classes are taught completely online and all contact with the instructor is through email and chat rooms. These classes require a tremendous amount of discipline since in effect you are responsible for teaching yourself. Feel free to talk with Mrs. Taylor if you think eCore might be of interest to you. Before students can register for eCore classes, they must complete and pass an online eCore quiz.
- While you are in learning support, you are advised and registered through the Learning Support Office regardless of your intended major. It is only AFTER you have completely exited the learning support program that you go to the academic department that offers your major and declare your intent to major in that area.
- Because financial aid awards usually involve federal funds and different regulations apply to different packages, the Learning Support Office does not answer specific questions about financial aid. Please direct those questions to the Financial Aid Office.
- Your learning support requirements are a condition of your enrollment at West Georgia, and we are obligated to be sure you are doing what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it. For that reason, all scheduling (registration, drop/add, etc.), is handled through the learning support office. Once you have exited learning support and after consulting each semester with your academic advisor in your major, you will have the opportunity to register yourself and adjust your schedule as needed.
