Geography is a diverse and dynamic field of study that ranges across the social and physical sciences. At UWG, the Department of Geosciences offers courses and research opportunities in all of the major subfields of Geography, including Human Geography (Economic, Cultural, Political and Urban Geography), Physical Geography (Biogeography, Environmental Geography, Weather and Climate, Geomorphology and Soils) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (including Spatial Analysis, Cartography, Remote Sensing and Airphoto Interpretation).  

Why should I choose UWG's Geography program?
  • The US Department of Labor identified GIS as one of the fastest growing and most important employment fields, along with nanotechnology and biotechnology.
  • UWG offers a comprehensive program and state-of-the-art facilities in GIS.
  • Geographers at UWG engage with important scientific, social, and environmental questions, such as the ecological impacts of climate change, the geopolitics of Arctic ice melting, the relationship between human health and the environment, urban poverty and neighborhood change, mapping and analyzing human population changes, and mapping the impacts of fire on the Okefenokee Swamp in south Georgia.
  • Geography students at UWG have the opportunity to work as paid research assistants on projects funded by national grants.  UWG geographers have received around $500,000 in grant funding in the past two years.
  • The department offers relevant and timely courses on topics such as sustainability, the global financial crisis, global environmental change, ethics and resistance, and cutting-edge applications of GIS. 
  • Geography students attend and present research at regional and national meetings.

  • The ESRI software site license program offers students access to the leading GIS applications.

What can I do after graduation, graduate school and job-wise?
  • Recent graduates from UWG Geography currently work for The Weather Channel and Google Maps.
  • Geographers work in city, county, and state government (planning, housing, transportation, park and forest services, resource management, environmental protection, etc.).
  • Work for companies in environmental management, energy and hydrology. 
  • Recent UWG Geography graduates work in mapping and data analysis.
  • Many geographers go to graduate school. Recent UWG Geography graduates went on to earn Master’s degrees through the study of topics ranging from urban air quality, refugees in Atlanta, to GIS techniques.

What kind of facilities and equipment will be made available to me?
