Unsilenced Cheers: Tragedy 20 Years Ago Gives Rise to West Georgia's National Cheerleading Dynasty

Former State University of West Georgia cheerleader Mandy Shierling Hill remembers the trip starting like any other. In the very early morning hours of Aug. 10, 1997, members of the university's 15-strong coed squad - bleary-eyed and half-awake - tightly packed themselves and their luggage into two 15-passenger vans. Many fell asleep against the hard glass of windows or the shoulders of teammates as they traveled through the pre-dawn darkness on a six-and-a-half-hour journey to Myrtle Beach, S.C.

For the first time in a century, a total solar eclipse will cross the country on Aug. 21. Advances made in transportation, technology and communications since 1919 provide scholars at the University of West Georgia a unique opportunity to study Earth, the sun and their interaction. UWG scientists and students are set to make the most of this celestial event with a research trip near Lexington, S.C. The College of Science and Mathematics also plans to host a community observation on campus at the UWG Observatory.

What's on your bucket list? Going on a safari? Perhaps a trip to Iceland? Or maybe a pilgrimage to Jerusalem? Well, Cory Lee Woodard has a bucket list, too. But he's already crossed all those items off his list. In fact, the 26-year-old has been to five continents, met Jimmy Carter, seen the Aurora Borealis and graduated with his bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of West Georgia. That's a pretty impressive list for any young adult, but Cory has completed all of this and more while confined to a wheelchair.

Commitment to Excellence Pays Off: UWG's Dr. George Kieh Wins 2016 Warren Akin IV Award

To be acknowledged through formal recognition from your colleagues or peers is a great honor, rarely seen. It's even more rare that one is able to leave such a lasting impression to be recognized for work accomplished more than five years ago, but University of West Georgia's Dr. George Kieh has made it happen. He recently received the Georgia Conference of the American Association of University Professors' Warren Akin IV Award for 2016.

Picture Perfect: Business Student Finds New Outlook, Opportunity Abroad

If I were to tell you that a University of West Georgia student recently held a photo exhibition in Atlanta, you might say, “Oh, impressive! A UWG art student had a show in Atlanta!” But you would be only half right. Yes, it is impressive, but you’re a little off base on the discipline. The student I’m referring to isn’t an art student – he’s a business student double majoring in management and management of information systems.

A Voice of Inspiration: Aimee Copeland Returns to Alma Mater to Share Motivating Messages

Aimee Copeland was a graduate student at the University of West Georgia in 2012 when she fell from a homemade zip line and contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a deadly disease that claimed both arms below the elbow, her right leg below the knee, and her left leg almost to her hip. She recently returned West to share her nothing-short-of-miraculous story of survival and perseverance with faculty and staff, some who were with her during those touch-and-go moments . . . as well as some lessons she's learned along the way.

Stemming from Stereotypes: Professor's Research Addresses Shortage of African-American Men in STEM

In an area seemingly dominated by men, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields still come up lacking. While it is true that the STEM world is a "man's world," it's not true for one demographic--African-American men. University of West Georgia's Dr. Christopher Jett aims to break down those barriers with his recent research on how racial issues impact and influence the teaching and learning of math.

A University of West Georgia fine arts graduate with a focus in art history and interior design has definitely taken the road less traveled to opening her own stationary company – Reyn Paper Co. A 2007 graduate, some would say Kristen Reynolds’ business venture was a bit of a surprise. But her family, who know her innovative personality and love for art, weren’t too surprised.

SAS Summit Yields Lively, Informative Discussions

Many of us know the age of "smart homes" is just around the corner. However, some of that technology is already here - in our office buildings, homes, cars, and the palm of our hand. We know that information is sent from these devices to some invisible place in "the cloud," but then what happens to it? Well, someone has to analyze it.
