Office of Research and Sponsored Projects
The University of West Georgia (UWG) broadly defines research as all scholarly and creative activities engaged in by faculty, staff and students. This definition includes such research activities as conducting experimental studies and surveys, developing and performing new works in the creative arts, developing new works or approaches in the humanities, developing curriculum, participating in public service, and applying the results of previous research. Conducting these activities effectively often requires funding from internal (within the university) and/or external (outside the University) sources. Faculty members may need funding to provide time off to pursue a project or the assistance of additional staff and/or specialized equipment to conduct the research. The project may require travel and supplies beyond what the department can reasonably provide. For all of these reasons and many more, faculty and staff may need funds to help defray the costs of their research activities.
NEH Summer Stipend Program
The National Endowment for the Humanities has announced a deadline of October 1, 2015, for submission of applications for Summer Stipend support in summer 2016.
Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to scholars and general audiences in the humanities. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archeological site reports, translations, editions and other scholarly resources. Stipends support projects at any stage of development.
Successful applications receive an award of $6,000 to support two consecutive months of full-time research and writing on projects at any stage of development. Recipients must work full-time on their project for two months.
Although applications are submitted by, and stipends awarded to, individuals and not to the university, full-time faculty members must be nominated by the university in order to be considered by the NEH. In order to coordinate the selection of UWG's two institutional nominations the ORSP will conduct an internal competition with proposals evaluated based on the NEH Summer Stipend Program Guidelines.
