    Biography

    Dr. Bob Powell is Professor of Physics and Director of the University of West Georgia Observatory. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree (1963) in physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and his Master of Science (1965) and Ph. D. Degrees (1967) from Clemson University. He has served at West Georgia since 1967. He has directed student projects in solid state physics and in astronomy. He also works extensively with area pre-college teachers and in-service teaches. He has received grants from the Georgia Department of Energy Resources and the Eisenhower Program from 1987-1997 to offer courses for those teachers. He has served as president of the Georgia Academy of Science and as president of the Southern Atlantic Coastal Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. He and area teachers have participated in the Telescopes in Education Program at the Mt. Wilson Observatory. Since 1996, he has been the West Georgia Coordinator for the Post-Secondary Readiness Enrichment Program (PREP), to provide assistance in area schools and in a West Georgia summer program (Project STARRR) to students in at-risk situations. He serves as the faculty advisor of the Phi Kappa Chapter of the Chi Omega Sorority. For this service, the has been recognized as the campus student organization advisor of the year in 2002 and 2004. His hobbies include photography, growing roses, and studying Civil War history.
