Past Political Science Club Tours of the State Capitol
On March 12th, 2009, University of West Georgia Political Science majors took a trip to the State Capitol on the infamous Crossover day in legislature. Sponsored by the Political Science Club and Pre-Law Society, over thirty students attended the trip including Dr. Caress’s Legislative Process class.
Students began the day with a meet and greet photo session with Georgia’s Governor Sonny Perdue. From the governor’s office, the group traveled across the street to meet with Insurance Commissioner and Republican gubernatorial candidate John Oxendine who gave an introductory talk about his agency’s duties and followed with a Q & A session. Oxendine described his many hats in Georgia including Insurance, Fire Safety, and Industrial Loan Commissioners, and Controller General. Also offering some insight into his upcoming campaign, Oxendine described his Fair Tax proposal and answered questions about mortgage lending and the economic crisis.

Later in the day, students observed legislative debate and voting in both the House of Representatives and Senate. Education, economic, and zoning bills were passed throughout each chamber after many questions were addressed by state representatives. Carroll County House Representative Timothy Bearden left the voting room to meet with students and answer questions about current legislative debate, voting procedures, and local issues. West Georgia students also toured the Senate floor during a legislative break after visiting the office of Carroll County District State Senator Bill Hamrick.
Junior Political Science major Mika Weaver, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, attended the trip for the first time with fellow classmates. She responded, “Watching Georgia state legislators put into action everything we have learned from our professors and textbooks was insightful and rewarding. I would encourage all students to visit the capitol.”
