Master's Degree

The History Department offers several options for students to pursue graduate education in public history and museum studies.

First, history graduate students may pursue a concentration in public history for their M.A.degree, with a minor field in an area of history of their choice.

Second, students may elect to complete a minor field in public history within the traditional history M.A. degree.  Many of our students pursuing this degree option have completed one or two additional courses to add either the Public History Certificate or the Museum Studies Certificate to their degree.

Third, students who are in the non-thesis track may complete a minor field in public history.  This option is particularly useful for teachers who would like to incorporate public history methods into their classroom presentations.  A few of our teachers have also completed additional courses to obtain one of our graduate certificates.

Fourth, students who already hold an M.A. or PhD in history or a closely-related field may gain skills and knowledge in public history through the completion of either the Public History or Museum Studies certificate.

To discuss these options, please contact program coordinator Dr. Ann McCleary.
