Security
-An effective residence hall security program depends upon residents' cooperation, staff supervision, and University Police assistance. Although the University makes every effort to provide adequate campus safety, the best security system is one in which every member of the community is alert. The University Police patrols the areas around the residence halls and is readily available to assist on a 24-hour basis. University Police not only assists residents when reporting thefts, accidents, and fires, but also provides emergency medical assistance, late night escorts, and motorist assistance including battery jump starts and keys locked in vehicles. The emergency number for police, fire, and ambulance is (678) 839-6000.
Fire Safety
If you discover a fire:
- Pull the nearest alarm pull station.
- Notify residence hall staff of the fire.
- Call University Police at (678) 839-6000.
When the fire alarm sounds:
- Leave the building immediately.
- Use the designated fire exits (if passable).
- Close all doors behind you as you exit.
- Walk, DO NOT RUN, as you exit the building.
- Stand clear of the building after evacuating.
- Do not re-enter the building until the fire alarm is silenced and you are instructed to enter.
Fire safety tips:
- Do not open the door if the door or doorknob is hot.
- If you cannot leave the room, go to the window and signal for help.
- If there is smoke in the room, keep low to the floor.
- DO NOT attempt to fight the fire when the alarm has sounded.
For your own protection, obey fire regulations. Failure to evacuate the hall anytime the alarm has sounded or tampering with fire safety equipment will result in disciplinary action.
Fire and safety inspections:
For the protection of all residents, the residence hall staff will conduct fire, health, and safety inspections of your room during the semester. Specific times will be communicated to you in advance.
Card Access/Security
A card access system is provided on all residence halls to allow only those residents of each hall to have access. Your ID card is your key to your residence hall. Students should never loan their ID card to another person nor should they allow anyone to follow them through their residence hall door.
Propping open outside doors
One of the greatest threats to the security of the residence halls is propping open outside doors after the doors have been secured. This practice may permit unwanted visitors to enter the residence hall and threaten the safety of all residents in the building. For this reason, propping outside doors is strictly prohibited.
Lost or Stolen Keys
It is the student's responsibility to keep the key that is issued during check-in. A resident who loses his/her key will be held responsible for the cost of lock replacement, approximately $30.00 per lock. Should the key be broken, a replacement key will be provided when the broken key is returned. If you believe your keys have been stolen, contact University Police, (678) 839-6000, to fill out a police report. The student is responsible for the cost of replacing the stolen key and the lock.
Bicycle security
University Police offers a bicycle registration program which allows you to register your bike for easy identification in the event it is stolen. For a one-time fee of $1.00, University Police will keep the make, color, and serial number of your bike on file for easy reference. Since bicycle thefts are common occurrences on university campuses, students are encouraged to keep their bikes secured to one of the bicycle racks provided around campus.
Dangerous weather
From time to time, hazardous weather conditions develop in the Carrollton area. Residence hall staff will instruct you on the proper procedures in case of a weather emergency. Also, University Police can be contacted for further information if needed.
