Narrative

The number of full-time faculty members is adequate to support the mission of the University of West Georgia.  Full-time faculty are fully qualified to teach the courses they are assigned.  Over 78% of the full-time faculty holds a doctorate or terminal degree in their academic discipline.  Program directors and unit administrators are qualified to lead their respective academic programs.  In the fall of 2009, full time faculty represented 77% of the total number of  teaching faculty.  The number of full-time faculty is sufficient to fulfill basic faculty functions such as curriculum design, development, and evaluation; teaching; assessing learning outcomes; student advising; and research and creative activity. As of the fall 2009 the institution’s student faculty ratio was 18 to 1; including undergraduate students only and 19 to 1 including both undergraduate and graduate students.

It is the policy of the University of West Georgia to certify credentials of all faculty as defined by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The University of West Georgia is committed to increasing funds and adding faculty lines as the student enrollment increases. The total number of full-time faculty increased from 431 in fall 2008 to 456 in fall 2009. This reflects a 5% increase in full-time faculty as our student enrollment increased by 2 % in AY2010.  In FY2010 UWG increased funding for seven additional new full-time core instructor positions and new tenure track positions. The FY2010 increases were in addition to the FY2009 13 new core positions and 14 new tenure track positions to meet high demand areas such as nursing, biology, communications, teacher education, and accounting.

The UWG Fact Book and the Common Data Set of the university provide the absolute numbers of faculty by rank, highest degree earned, tenure status, ethnicity, and gender. The University of West Georgia faculty currently is comprised of 15.6% non-whites and 51.3% female faculty members. The University reviews and update academic policies as needed. The guidelines for evaluation, promoting, and awarding tenure can be found in the Faculty Handbook. The policies and procedures identified in the Faculty Handbook ensure a continuing assessment of our faculty‘s teaching, service, and scholarly activities.
