Assessment of Academic Programs
Purpose
With a primary mission of "Academic Excellence in a Personal Environment" and a guiding principle from its current strategic plan of delivering "Academic Programs Balancing Liberal Arts with Professional Preparation," the University of West Georgia's is committed to improving student learning. One method of implementing this mission is through the assessment and improvement of student learning outcomes in academic programs.
The purpose of assessing student learning outcomes in academic programs is:
- To improve student learning, and
- To maintain compliance with SACS Accrediation Standards and Board of Regents Policy
Process
Each student learning outcome in each academic program should be assessed regularly, normally once per year. Prior to putting assessment information in the system, the following steps should be complete:
- Identify the Academic Program (if it is noted on a transcript, it must be assessed. Separate assessments are needed for each program offered online and off site)
- Identify the Student Learning Outcomes (statements describing what a student should be able to do when they have completed the program)
- Identify the Artifact (assignment, exam, project, etc… used to measure student performance relative to the learning outcome)
- Collect the Assessment Data (student scores on the the artifact)
- Identify Improvements (implemented changes based on the student data in the form of curriculum changes, pedagogical changes, or changes in the artifact)
Implementation
Please review the instructional videos below and input the assessment information in the UWG Assessment System.
