3.9 Student Affairs and Services

Comprehensive Standard:

3.9.3 The institution provides a sufficient number of qualified staff - with appropriate education or experience in the student affairs area - to accomplish the mission of the institution. (Qualified staff)

Narrative:

The University of West Georgia Mission states:

"The University of West Georgia seeks to achieve preeminence in providing educational excellence in a personal environment through an intellectually stimulating and supportive community for its students, faculty, and staff" [1]

The largest proportion of student support services is provided by the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. The full list of all student support services and the links to all departments responsible for delivery of these services to students are included in the report for Core Requirement 2.10.  The report for the Comprehensive Standard 3.3.1.3 discusses assessment of the student services provides by the University of West Georgia.     

The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management mission is:  

"…to enhance the engagement, development, and success of students through comprehensive, intentional, and student-centered programs, services, and activities.  We accomplish this with a commitment to growth and development of students and staff while living our values of leadership, professionalism, inclusiveness, and collaboration.       

Student Affairs personnel are experienced, student-oriented, and extensively involved in activities that enhance and complement students’ education outside the classroom. The following departments within the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management provide student support services:  Admissions [2], Career Services [3], Counseling and Career Development [4], Enrollment Services [5], Excel Center for Academic Success [6], Financial Aid [7], First-Year Programs [8], Health Services [9], Housing and Residence Life [10], Registrar [11],  and University Recreation [12]. A complete list of staff members who work within these departments is maintained as the "Roster of All Directors and Associate Directors/Second in Command Professional Staff" [13]. The professional credentials of each staff member are maintained in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.  These materials, including individual resumes, are organized by functional area, and can be accessed through the "Qualifications of Staff" link on the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management website [14].

Additionally, student-to-staff ratios and the University of West Georgia staffing data are available ("Common Staffing Standards for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services" [15] and "Qualified Staff UWG Data" [16]).           

Furthermore, being committed to the divisional mission statement, Student Affairs administrators are active members of relevant professional organizations to remain current in their particular fields and establish networks for sharing best practices. Some of these organizations include:

It should be noted that the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management provides services to all students, regardless of the mode of delivery of the classes they are taking. The table "Comparison of F2F vs. External-Online Student Services" provides the details on the services available to UWG students [17]. The dedicated and experienced Distance and Extended Education Center staff plays the major part in assisting distance learning students and faculty [18].
