The University of West Georgia has been in operation since 1906. The University of West Georgia began as the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School. The school became a two-year institution of higher education in 1933 and, hence, was renamed West Georgia College. In 1957, the Institution began offering its first four-year degree, and in 1996 it was renamed the State University of West Georgia. The Institution has been known as the University of West Georgia since 2005. Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs are offered in multiple major areas through the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Sciences and Mathematics, the College of Social Science, the College of Education, the Richards College of Business, and the School of Nursing. The University of West Georgia awards four doctoral degrees:
School of Nursing: the Doctor of Education with a major in Nursing Education;
College of Education: the Doctor of Education in Professional Counseling and Supervision, the Doctor of Education with a major in School Improvement;
College of Social Sciences: the Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology: Consciousness and Society .
In addition to these degree programs, the University offers a variety of other degree and certification programs to meet the diverse needs of the State of Georgia .
