Learning Outcomes


Undergraduate Degrees

All of the programs in the Department of Special Education and Speech-Language Pathology are designed to ensure that candidates who successfully complete a designated program meet national and learned society standards. Thus, all objectives of course syllabi are correlated with the College of Education Conceptual Framework Descriptors, national standards, and the Council for Exceptional Children Performance Based Standards.

B.S. in Education: Special Education-Mental Retardation and Initial Certification in Mental Retardation

The learning outcomes for the candidates who receive the Bachelor of Science in Special Education: Mental Retardation or who are initially certified through a program in Mental Retardation are taken from the Council for Exceptional Children's Core Performance Based Standards and the professional organization's specific standards for Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities. In addition, the candidates must demonstrate competency in the 10 Principles of the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) established by the Chief State School Officers Council.

B.S.in Education: Speech-Language Pathology

The learning outcomes for the candidates who receive the Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology or who are initially certified through this program are taken from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association guidelines. In addition, the candidates must demonstrate competency in the 10 Principles of the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) established by the Chief State School Officers Council.


 

Advanced Degrees In Special Education

Master of Education: Interrelated Special Education; Education Specialist: Special Education Leadership or Curriculum Specialist

The learning outcomes for the candidates who enroll in the Master of Education in Special Education: Interrelated and are certified through completion of the department's approved program are taken from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Five Core Standards, the NBPTS Exceptional Needs Standards and the Council for Exceptional Children's Core Performance Based Standards for the Preparation of Teachers of Special Education. The candidates for the Master of Education in Special Education: Interrelated also must demonstrate competence in the Multicategorical Individualized General Curriculum Referenced Standards and Individualized Independence Curriculum Referenced Standards. Candidates who seek certification in Director of Special Education or Supervision in Special Education also must satisfy the Council for Exceptional Children's Performance-Based Standards for the Special Education Administrator.

Master of Education: Speech-Language Pathology

The learning outcomes for the candidates who enroll in the Master of Education in Speech-Language Pathology and are certified through completion of the department's approved program are taken from the National Boards Professional Standards Commission's (NBPTS) Five Core Standards and the guidelines of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Graduates of this program are eligible to become candidates in the Special Education Educational Specialist Program.

 

Alternative Certification Programs

Nondegree Initial Certification in Special Education: Learning Disabilities/Behavior Disorders

The learning outcomes for the candidates who enroll in the Nondegree Initial Certification in Special Education: Learning Disabilities/Behavior Disorders and are initially certified through completion of the department's approved program are correlated with the Council for Exceptional Children's Core Performance Based Standards for Preparation of Teachers of Special Education and the professional organization's specific standards for Learning Disabilities and Emotional/Behavior Disorders. In addition, the candidates must satisfy the 10 Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) Principles established by the Chief State School Officers Council.
