Biography

Krystal earned her PhD from the City University of New York in Social/Personality Psychology. Her dissertation under the mentorship of Kay Deaux, William Cross, Jr., and Michelle Fine, examined the conditions under which members of low-status groups accept, maintain, and perpetuate their low-status position (false consciousness).
During her time at the University of West Georgia, Krystal continues to be engaged in varies critical research projects across diverse contexts to document and explore the different aspects of group identities and intergroup relations among various ethnic groups using different methodologies. More precisely, Krystal’s research considers the ways in which members of devalued groups (women, minorities, immigrants, etc.) manage and respond to discrimination and devaluation and the larger implications for social justice. Her other area of research examines the negotiation of social identities in the increasingly multicultural context of the United States due to international migration. In this work, she examines the psychological implications of Black immigration on Black identity and the role of reflected appraisal in the construction of self among first-and-second generation immigrants from various ethnic/racial/religious backgrounds.
