    Biography

    Marianne Mason joined the faculty of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of West Georgia, in the Fall of 2013. Prior to her tenure at UWG, she was a faculty member at Georgia State University and Georgia Institute of Technology. She holds a PhD in linguistics from the University of Georgia. Her areas of research interest include language and the law, discourse analysis/pragmatics, language for the professions, and technology-enhanced learning. Dr. Mason has published an academic book on the (Spanish/English) bilingual courtroom, Courtroom Interpreting, as well as multiple articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals in language and the law, translation and interpreting studies, and pragmatics/discourse analysis, such as Journal of Pragmatics, Pragmatics: Quarterly Publication of the International Pragmatics Association, Police Quarterly, Journal of Business and Technical Communication, International Journal of Speech, Language, and the Law, Translation and Interpreting Studies (forthcoming), among others. Dr. Mason also frequently presents her research in international conferences and is actively involved in serving the academic community. She is a member of the board of reviewers of the Journal of Business and Technical Communication and serves as reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed journals in applied linguistics and language for the professions. In addition to Dr. Mason's teaching and research activities, she has served the legal community by providing expert testimony and opinion/reports in criminal and civil cases in language and the law, in particular cases relating to the bilingual courtroom (e.g., linguistic evaluation of interpreted events), the discourse of police interrogation, and the interpretation of legal statutes. Dr. Mason is currently co-editing a collection on the discourse of police investigation.
