Mary began her career with UWG in the fall of 2014 when she taught a READ/WRITE (READ3263) course as an adjunct for the Georgia Highlands College campus. Teaching pre-service teachers after 10 years in the elementary school classroom was refreshing. In the fall of 2015 she began as a full time instructor teaching Children's Literature and the READ/WRITE class on the Carrollton campus. She describes this as her dream job because she loves children's literature and writing. As a young child, her grandfather regaled her with ghost stories from the hills of Kentucky beginning her lifelong love of story. In her spare time, she writes family stories and shares them with extended family. Mary wants her passion for literature to be a contagion in her classroom, passing it on to future teachers.

Mary graduated from Atlanta Christian College in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in Bible with a double minor in Christian Education and Missions. After serving 12 years in East Africa with Christian Missionary Fellowship, she and her family returned to the United States and settled in Bremen, Georgia. While working as a paraprofessional at Jones Elementary School, she pursued a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Early Childhood Education from Piedmont College. Her master's project, entitled "Roots and Wings", explored the benefits of integrating new students into a school culture using Jones Elementary School as a pilot.

Outside the classroom, Mary is involved in Camerata, an a cappella choral group, a writer's group and her church in Bremen. Mary and her husband, Dennis, have two grown children, Marshall and Elizabeth.
