Below are easy to read guides made with you, the student, in mind.
Three types of Windows 7 installations are explained below and there are separate guides for each one. Please read the descriptions carefully and select the type of installation that best fits your needs. Each guide below uses the installation DVD you obtained from SITS (either when you stopped by our office or during your orientation).
Your computer must meet the minimum requirements of Windows 7 in order for you to install Windows 7. If you are not sure about the version of Windows you are currently running or need to know how to check your computer to see if it meets the minimum requirements, please Click Here to view our Windows 7 FAQ Sheet.
You must be connected to the internet (via internet cable not wireless) for each of the installations/guides below.
Upgrade (from Vista) to Windows 7:
This method directly upgrades your computer from Microsoft Windows Vista to Microsoft Windows 7. It preserves profiles, passwords, and programs as well as leaves documents, pictures, and music in their original locations. Keep in mind, your computer MUST be running Microsoft Windows Vista (NOT Microsoft Windows XP) to be able to do this upgrade.

Install/Reformat Windows 7:
This type of installation will save your information (documents, pictures, music, etc...) for you. If there was a previous version of Windows on your computer, those files and folders will be moved to a folder named Windows.old. The student will be able to access the information in the Windows.old folder, but will not be able to use the previous version of Windows or any of the programs that were installed on it.

Clean Install of Windows 7:
This type installs Windows 7 without backing up or saving any information. Partitions will be deleted and the hard drive will be wiped clean before installation of Windows 7. CAUTION!! NOTHING WILL BE SAVED!! This installs a fresh copy of Windows. This is as if you are making your computer like it was when it was new.
