Thomas B. Murphy Memorial Fund

The University of West Georgia is proud of its connection to the late House Speaker Thomas B. Murphy (1924-2007). As part of the Board of Regents $8 million Ingram Library renovation and expansion plan, the library will install a replica exhibit of the Speaker’s capital office.  This permanent exhibit with related programming, will have prominence on the ground floor of the library, providing high visibility to students, faculty, and the public.

photo Speaker Murphy had a rich history of support for the University of West Georgia and higher education in Georgia in general. In honor of his service to the state of Georgia, the university named a wing in Adamson Hall after the late Speaker, and the current Athletics building is named to honor his wife, Agnes, and his brother, James. In addition, UWG’s Murphy Center for Public Service operates from the Political Science Department, promoting  government and civic education and service. Ingram Library houses the Thomas B. Murphy Holocaust Teacher Training and Resource Center as well as Georgia's Political Heritage Program. The political heritage program includes Murphy’s papers, which have recently been processed in the Special Collections department.

Your contribution to the Thomas B. Murphy Memorial Fund will help plan, build, and enhance the office and related exhibits, and programming for years to come.  The State of Georgia, the University System of Georgia , and the University of West Georgia will be forever indebted to Speaker Murphy. By giving to the Murphy memorial fund, you will be helping the university share the impact and example of this legendary figure and the story of his times with future generations.
