The university will host its third annual UWG Disability Awareness Day on Thursday, Oct. 29, with campus wide events scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The activities are free and the community is invited to attend.
Sponsored by the Student Development Center, Disability Services, the Achiever’s Student Organization and the Department of Health, Physical Education and Sports Studies, this day of events will serve as an outlet to increase disability awareness and advocacy on the UWG campus. Most of the activities will take place around and in the Campus Center.
“The theme for this year’s event is ‘Celebrate Abilities,”’ said Sharon Nunnally, assistant coordinator of Disability Services and co-coordinator of the event. “We are honored to have Ms. Wheelchair GA, numerous vendors and BlazeSports joining us for the day of events. I hope that all members of the UWG community will participate in the many activities.”
BlazeSports will host sports activities including wheelchair basketball, wheelchair team handball, wheelchair tennis, blindfolded goal ball, sit volleyball and bocce ball.
Experiential stations for participants include making peanut butter sandwiches blindfolded, inspirational video viewing and free ice cream and drinks.
Vendors with a wide variety of services and supplies will be on campus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Representatives from BlazeSports will be coordinating sports activities from 9:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. and 1:45 to 3 p.m. A campus wide Wheelchair Rally is scheduled 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Other activities for the day will include health screenings, a hearing loss experience and a raffle.
