Mike Overmier, a senior majoring in public relations with a minor in journalism at Georgia Southern University, spent his summer vacation as an intern at the UWG office of University Communications and Marketing.
Classroom studies were put to the test with assignments ranging from writing magazine copy to video editing and photograph assignments.
The 8 to 5 routine and four-day workweeks were a far cry from a typical summer break, but it was time well spent. The internship gave Overmier valuable time in the field and a pretty good idea of what he will be doing with a degree in public relations.
“This was an amazing experience working here,” said Overmier. “It gave me so many opportunities to hone my craft and skills in PR and journalism.”
While writing stories for the alumni magazine, Perspective, Overmier had the opportunity to interview and photograph alum including the Georgia Principal of the Year, Steve Milleto, host of “Friday Night SmackDown,” Todd Grisham, and founder of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Bill Bolling.
The intern's articles were placed on the front of the university website, the UWG Facebook page and in the local papers.
Overmier also received hands-on training from the campus photographer and assisted in producing a video that will be shown at an awards ceremony in Canada.
“I was part of the planning in meetings and later on we discussed script development, shot B-roll, filmed the president, the vice president of CPF and almost 100 of the staff,” said Overmier. “Weeks later, I was able to travel to the video production company's studio to look over and help edit the first draft of the video. This has been an awesome experience.”
Overmier will return to Statesboro this month with a full portfolio for class credit and for future career interviews. For more information on the UCM office and to view the Photo Library, go to http://www.westga.edu/ucm/.
