HOPE students at the University of West Georgia will get the VIP treatment on the Day of HOPE, Tuesday, Feb. 24.
Sponsored by the EXCEL Center for Academic Success, the annual event will honor all UWG students who have maintained a 3.0 Grade Point Average and their HOPE scholarships. HOPE scholarships, funded through the state lottery system, pay the tuition and book fees for in-state students who have a 3.0 GPA or higher.
As part of their recognition, HOPE scholars will receive a VIP pass at the game against the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers, free food and drinks before the basketball men and women's games, and an exciting half-time opportunity to win prizes including gift certificates and an I-Pod and a DVD player. The games begin at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. in The Coliseum.
In addition to the half-time giveaway event, participating restaurants and businesses, including the UWG Bookstore, Publix, Belk and more than a dozen eateries, will offer discounts for HOPE scholars and students with a UWG student ID throughout the day.
Pamela Maxey, academic advisor, said it is a big achievement for students to keep their HOPE scholarship until graduation.
"This is the EXCEL Center's way of showing how proud we are of our HOPE Scholars," said Maxey. "The Day of HOPE recognizes the hard work HOPE scholars put into maintaining their scholarship and encourages all others to pursue excellence."
The EXCEL Center provides resources for all UWG students to make a successful acclimation to college life. Its services include free tutoring in all core classes, academic advisement and probation counseling, and mentoring programs for HOPE scholars, freshmen and for students in the Multicultural Achievement Program.
