The University of West Georgia will welcome hundreds of college students from almost 40 states at its annual Tisinger College Debate event January 17-19.
The event marks the first sponsorship by UWG Debate Team alumnus, Carey Ichter, and the Atlanta law firm he is a partner of, Adorno and Yoss. Adorno and Yoss is the nation’s largest minority-owned law firm with offices in Atlanta and throughout the United States.
“Adorno and Yoss recognizes that a large percentage of top debaters ultimately become the best and the brightest courtroom advocates,” said Ichter, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree from UWG in 1981 and his law degree from the University of Georgia.
“We want to create a pipeline from that source to Adorno and Yoss, and we want to foster and promote debate as an activity. This investment will support the debate community, the legal system, the university and, hopefully, the law firm.”
More than 70 college debate teams with 160 participants from across the country will compete in the national tournament. Adorno is providing $6,500 in cash scholarship awards for the debaters, with $1,000 going to the winning team.
UWG Debate has earned a national standing for more than three consecutive decades and consistently is ranked in the top ten in the nation. The debates are open to the public and are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Humanities, Boyd and Pafford Buildings located on the Academic Quad. The community is invited to attend.
