A new era begins this week at UWG when the Coliseum becomes the new home for the Wolves basketball and volleyball teams.
The West Georgia Wolves men and women’s teams begin Gulf South Conference East Division play with a double header against University of Montevallo’s basketball teams.
Women’s action begins at 5:30 p.m. and the men play at 7:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after completion of the women’s game.
“Everyone has been looking forward to this for a long time,” said Eddie Duffey, assistant athletic director for operations. “We are extremely grateful to everyone at the university, and elsewhere, who made this happen. This facility is second to none, and we look forward to calling it home.”
The Coliseum seats 6,790 and will host a variety of other events in addition to sports including commencement ceremonies, Preview Day activities for future students and freshmen orientation. It will also be available as the largest concert venue between Atlanta and Birmingham.
Though sporting events will get much of the attention, the Coliseum will also serve as an academic venue. The building is home to the Department of Physical Education with physical education classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices open for spring semester.
