The UWG Debate Team finished fall semester with a national ranking of third at Wake Forest University in the fall semester’s last debate competition. With more than 150 teams in competition, Wake Forest's tournament is the largest held in the fall.
Florida resident Jim Schultz of Jupiter and Vince Binder of Gainesville defeated teams representing the nation’s top schools including the George Washington University, University of Georgia and the University of Texas.
UWG Debate Coach Dr. Michael Hester said the results of the tournament were well earned.
“We’ve had a great year so far,” said Hester. “Jim and Vince have established themselves as one of the top teams in the country. The entire squad was working hard this semester. They all pitched in to assist Jim and Vince in preparing for the big debates we had. Making it to the semifinals of the Wake tournament is a fantastic accomplishment.”
Other members of the Debate Team are Jadon Marianetti of Mountain View, CA; Zak Schaller of Carrollton; Darcey McCampbell of Eagan, MN; and Sara Simonis of Massillon, OH.
The UWG Debate Team has a long and illustrious record of competing in the National Debate Tournament for 36 consecutive years. Schultz and Binder ended their winning streak in the semifinals when they lost to Northwestern University. Schultz placed 16th as an individual speaker.
The squad’s next competition will be at the University of Southern California and California State University at Fullerton in January 2009. For more information, call 678-839-6636.
