Music, and lots of it, will be wafting through campus as the Department of Music continues its spring season of musical excellence with spectacular performances this month starting with a Choral Orchestral Concert performance by the UWG Concert Choir on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 8:15 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.
The music continues with performances from the UWG Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band on Thursday, Feb. 21, and with a guest artist recital that features the rich sounds of saxophonist Steven Stusek with pianist Konstantza Chernov on Monday, Feb. 25.
Under the direction of Dr. Kevin Hibbard, professor of music and chair of the Department of Music, the Concert Choir will present the extended 21st-century work, “Missa Romantica,” by contemporary composer James Quitman Mulholland.
The choir will perform with a full orchestra that includes UWG faculty and students, and professional contract musicians.
“It is always exciting to perform a major work with an orchestra and we try to provide that experience for our students almost every year,” said Hibbard. “It is also another opportunity for the West Georgia community to hear an orchestra without going to Atlanta.”
Tickets for the Concert Choir are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for community students, $3 for children 12 and under and free to all UWG students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the TCPA Box Office, Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. All other February music events are free.
Performances for the month of March offer something for everyone and include a Spring Operatic Production of Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” by the UWG Opera Workshop; a Faculty Recital featuring Luan Mueller, instructor of clarinet; the upbeat sounds of the UWG Jazz Ensemble, a Saxophone Invitational Concert, an entertaining Guitar Night and a unique Brass Fest.
The month of April will continue the cultural celebration with 15 music events that are sure to please including the 23rd Annual Sunbelt Jazz Festival.
