This year marks the 40th anniversary of Greek life at the University of West Georgia and to celebrate the occasion, West Georgia and several Greek alumni will host a Greek Gala and Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. in the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta. The event will celebrate 40 years of service, help raise funds for the new university stadium and create support for future generations of West Georgia alumni. The gala is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, A Legendary Event Design & Catering, Jenny Pruitt & Associates Realtors and individual hosts.

UWG is home to more than 20 different Greek organizations but began its Greek traditions humbly in 1968 with a group of young men who created the first Greek organization on the West Georgia College campus. Following in their footsteps, a group of young women organized the first sorority in the winter of 1969. The organizations have helped shape campus culture for decades, and they are continuing this tradition by stepping up with the Greek Gala and Celebration to support the university.

Alumni Bonnie Wolf ‘71 and Rob Dial ‘06 are directing the planning committee for the gala. Alumni of each fraternity and sorority have been invited to participate in event planning.

“This is truly one of the most collaborative projects within the Greek community,” said Dial. “The stadium is a crucial piece of the puzzle for UWG and will be a wonderful place for Greek alumni to spend time when they return to campus. If we act now, the stadium will be a reality in the fall of 2009.”

“West Georgia was dramatically changed back in 1968,” said Wolf. “Greek leadership in the ’60s and ’70s transformed UWG from a suitcase college to a thriving student campus.”

“We are delighted to re-engage our Greek alumni,” said Erin Henderson, UWG director of corporate and foundation relations. “The Greek community has been an integral part of the leadership on West Georgia’s campus, and the Greek alumni have continued their leadership with the university and the community.”
