Celebrate Diversity in March

March on the UWG campus is full of programs promoting cultural awareness. All of these events are free and open to the public.

The Latino Cultural Society opens UWG Latino Week on Monday, March 5, at 7 p.m. with an Immigration Forum in TLC 1303. Join LCS, La Raza (102.3 FM) and the Brazilian steakhouse, Samba Loca, for treats on Tuesday, March 7, on the Campus Center patio from noon to 4 p.m.

Louis Enrique Negrón, the former Director of Minority Outreach Programs at Georgia Gwinnett College, will speak about how to succeed in college on Wednesday, March 7. His “How to Be Successful in College: Retention, Progression, and Graduation" talk will begin at 7 p.m. in TLC 1303. Negrón is a recipient of the 2010 Civic/Government Hispanic Achievement Business Leadership Award.

Rounding out the week will be a 6 p.m. Levi Stephens Coffee House gathering at the Starbucks on Friday, March 9, sponsored by Weekends West Georgia.

The third Annual Multicultural Festival kicks off at noon on March 15. This year’s celebration offers music, dance and art from around the world. On hand will be dancers from Liberia, China and Indonesia. A highlight will be a Chinese Lion Dance.

Art by John Martin and Lee-Jan Jan will be on display. DJ Omari Mann, the Carrollton African Drummers, Soweto Street Beat and the Henry Wang Chinese Music Ensemble will perform.

Students will also be able to participate in a dance contest as well as receive henna tattoos.

The festival will be in the Campus Center Ballroom, the Campus Center Patio, and the grassy triangle. It ends at 5 p.m.

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Office of Institutional Diversity hosts a screening of “Miss Representation.” The documentary explores how the mainstream media has contributed to the under-representation of women in influential positions. The screening will be in the Campus Center Ballroom on March 27 at 7 p.m.

It is co-sponsored by the UWG Women’s Studies program and the UWG chapter of Amnesty International.
