This year’s Run for UWG will include a three-person relay as well as the 5K run, a one-mile walk/run, and fun tot trot for children at the UWG athletics complex on Thursday, Oct. 4.
“Our planning committee has created new ways for people to be involved in the run and support student scholarships at West Georgia,” explained Frank Pritchett, director of alumni relations and annual giving. “We hope area businesses and schools will create one or more teams. We know some can run a leg of the 5K but not the entire course. The new relay gives more UWG supporters an opportunity to participate.”
The relay teams will compete concurrently with the 5K runners with baton hand-offs at the one and two mile marks, said Pritchett.
Early registration closes on Sept. 20, so those interested can pick up a form at the UWG Alumni House or download the run application and map of the course.
“Registration continues right up to the start of the event, but participants can save on the fees if they register before Sept. 20,” Pritchett said.
Pritchett said the committee has “great ideas” and that runners can expect more event improvements to come.
“Last year we moved the course so that it was completely confined to the athletics complex and participants found the new course to be quite a challenge. We want them to focus on the event, their times and having fun,” said Pritchett, adding that next year the registration and payment process will include an online option.
Proceeds from the Run for UWG benefit the Go West for A DAY campaign, which supports student scholarships.
“We are very grateful to our community sponsors,” said Pritchett. “Their commitment to the Go West for A DAY campaign ensures that all funds raised go directly to help our students.”
