This December, the University of West Georgia placed third among nine institutions that competed at the 20th International Economics Convention in Mumbai, India. The team paper took third place, and team member Borja Arino was awarded second place as “Best Presenter” of the convention.
Each institution was assigned a research topic relevant to the theme, “India: The Next Superpower—Dream or Reality?” The students’ presentation, “International Relations and Defense,” was supported by archival research and statistical analysis.
“Our team brought its best to the competition and showed why UWG excels at undergraduate research,” said Dr. John Upson, faculty member and team sponsor. “The team gave an outstanding presentation that clearly addressed the issue and included the most rigorous empirical analysis of the convention.”
UWG President Dr. Beheruz Sethna added, “I echo Dr. Upson’s assessment. The UWG team did an exceptional job in its research and presentation, and I am very proud of all our students and Dr. Upson’s leadership. The credit goes to them entirely.”
UWG was the only foreign team to compete in the convention and consisted of four students from the Richards College of Business: Borja Arino, Dionna Livingston, Amaan Kazerouni and Ayaan Kazerouni. They were joined by faculty sponsor Dr. John Upson, Assistant Professor of Strategic Management, and Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna, President of UWG.
“We have already achieved national recognition in undergraduate research and will continue to carve out such a reputation within the United States,” said Dr. Sethna. “In addition, my hope and vision is that UWG will be able to establish an international presence, such that the concept of a robust undergraduate research program in selected countries will gradually come to be associated with UWG and its trend-setting model.”
President Sethna gave the valedictory address entitled, “Global Leadership in a Flattening World.”
The Richards College of Business, the Honors College and International Services and Programs sponsored the team.
This is the second year that UWG had a team attend the convention. The team has been invited back for next year’s conference.
