UWG Hosts Ruffin Reading Bowl for 30 Georgia Schools

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Hundreds of students visited the University of West Georgia’s campus to compete in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl on Feb. 2, 2013. Teams from as far as Rome City, Muscogee County and Spaulding County traveled to Carrollton for the competition, which consisted of 80 elementary school students, 120 middle school students and 60 high school students.

“I had several coaches and parents go out of their way to declare that this was one of the smoothest bowls they have ever attended,” said Jean Cook, regional coordinator for HRRB. “I know that is, in large part, due to the efforts of entities across campus.”

The HRRB is an academic competition that quizzes Georgia students on the Georgia Peach Book Award list, a group including recent bestsellers according to each age group. Students compete in a local countywide competition where they are quizzed on plot points, characters and other details from the books. The winners of each local bowl then advance to the regional level, which consists of six or seven rounds of 10 questions each.

Helen Ruffin, a now retired DeKalb County media specialist, started the reading bowl. Ruffin’s vision was to have teams of students from different schools compete to test their knowledge of selected books. She shared this vision with her colleagues who embraced her idea and the reading bowl was born. Today, the Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl welcomes fourth graders to high school seniors statewide.

“The vast majority of the volunteers for the bowl came from UWG,” said Cook. “Volunteers read questions, kept time and moderated each round. I have so much gratitude for those who assisted by volunteering. I certainly hope they will continue.”

The top two teams in each category will advance to the next competition at Lovinggood Middle School on Feb. 23.
