The finals of the 2013 Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Soccer Championships are set to be held on the University of West Georgia campus. Matches will be played May 17 and 18 at University Stadium at Ra-Lin Field.
According to details released last week by the GHSA, UWG will play host to three-of-six championship matches in both the girls and boys brackets. The other six will be played on the campus of Kennesaw State University.
The GHSA plans to announce which classifications will be played at which venue following the completion of quarterfinal round matches on May 10 and 11.
Champions in classes AAA and AAAA will be crowned on Friday, May 17. Girls title contests will begin at 5:00 p.m., followed by the boys matches at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's schedule has girls finals in classes A and AA set for noon; boys matches in those classifications will be played at 2:30 p.m. Finally, the big schools get center stage as the AAAAA and AAAAAA girls title matches begin at 5:00 p.m., with the boys finals in those classes set for 7:30 p.m.
University Stadium at Ra-Lin Field has never before hosted the sport of soccer. UWG football has called the facility home for the past four seasons. West Georgia area youth football has occasionally been staged at the stadium including contests in the annual Kiwanis Bowl series. Also, high school football was played there as part of last year's inaugural West Georgia Football Classic, an event that is scheduled to return to the campus this year on August 24.
UWG is no stranger to playing host to GHSA post-season events. For three seasons (2010-12), The Coliseum was the host site for quarterfinal round action in the GHSA Basketball Tournament. The event was not brought to UWG in 2013 because of a scheduling conflict, and hopes are for the basketball tourney to return to UWG in 2014.
