Academy Award-winning screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher will host a screening of his latest film “Violet and Daisy” at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center on Friday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Fletcher will be hosting an interactive, advanced screening of “Violet and Daisy,” the soon to be released film that he both wrote and directed about a pair of teenage assassins fighting crime in New York City. The film stars Alexis Bledel, Saoirse Ronan, James Gandolfini and Danny Trejo. Following the screening, he will be participating in a question and answer session with the audience. A reception at Underground Books will take place thereafter. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center, and the screening will begin at 7:30 p.m.
"It is incredibly exciting and a real honor to have a world-class talent like Fletcher coming to talk to our students,” said Dr. Alison Umminger, professor of English at UWG and organizer for the event. “Events like this give our film program greater depth and a real-world resonance. We hope our students will be inspired."
Fletcher, who won an Academy Award in 2010 for his screenplay “Precious,” is a graduate of Harvard University and New York University, and has taught at both NYU and Columbia. Fletcher’s accolades for “Precious” also include Best First Screenplay from the Independent Spirit Awards, Outstanding Writer in a Motion Picture from NAACP Image Awards and Best Screenplay from the AAFCA Awards. He remains the first and only African-American to have received an Academy Award for writing.
He will host the event along with the University of West Georgia departments of English and Mass Communications, the Dean’s offices of the College of Arts and Humanities and the College of Social Sciences, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and the Film Studies program.
The film will be released to theaters in June 2013. For more information on the film and to watch the official trailer, please visit http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/violetdaisy/.
