The summer has started off with a bang for the ace of the 2013 UWG pitching staff, as Jamie Sexton led his summer ball team, the Winchester Royals of the Valley Baseball League in Virginia, to a victory on opening night last Friday. But that was the tip of the iceberg, as Sexton was named Honorable Mention All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Sexton's numbers were among the best in school history during the 2013 season, as he produced a sub-2.00 ERA and a 10-4 season in his sophomore campaign. He was named First Team All-GSC and consensus First Team All-Region before earning the title of All-American this week.
It marks the ninth player in UWG history to be named as an All-American and the first since Stuart Drew in 2011. He is the first pitcher in school history to be an All-American.
The award for Sexton makes eight for his career while at West Georgia, as he was named Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week twice this season in addition to the All-GSC nod and three All-Region awards. He was also named to the GSC All-Tournament team for his play in this year's tourney, leading the Wolves to two victories and a spot on Championship Day.
All of that earned Sexton a starting role in the summer opener for the wooden bat Royals last Friday, where he went 6.1 innings, scattering 11 hits and striking out eight. He had one walk and allowed two runs, with none of those runs counting as earned. Winchester will play 44 games this summer from June until the end of July. Sexton played last year for the Douglasville Bulls and had an ERA of less than 1.00 and earned a spot in the Sun Belt League All-Star Game.UWG All-Americans
