University of West Georgia’s Richards College of Business dedicated a memorial garden in honor of the late Charlotte Sewell Worley on Thursday, May 30, 2013.

Charlotte Sewell WorleyFamily, friends and faculty members gathered together in the courtyard beside the Richards College of Business to remember the beloved Charlotte Sewell Worley. A beautiful garden was built in her honor to be enjoyed by students, faculty, friends and family.

Charlotte’s son, Robin S. Worley, her nephew, L. Richard Plunkett, and her brother, Warren Sewell, were present at the dedication and spoke of fond memories of Charlotte. Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna, president of UWG, and Dr. Faye S. McIntyre, dean of the Richards College of Business, also offered remarks.

“When I see what’s been done, the word lovely comes to my mind and how lovely this occasion is, and it’s made more beautiful by the friends, close friends, of mother,” said Robin.

“When I look at the garden here today, and when I think about a garden, I compare that to the qualities of mother,” said Robin. “A garden is a simple statement. It’s there to be beautiful, and momma was pretty inside and out. Momma was cheerful, and it’s nice to walk through a garden. It makes you happy.”

Robin S. WorleyIn closing, Robin spoke on the legacy of his mother. “A garden is always to me hope and spring eternal, and that is what we hope our parents are for us,” he said. “They give us something positive to remember them by and create a legacy that hopefully we can follow.”

Charlotte was a leading member of the West Georgia community who loved gardens and was a proud grower of award-winning orchids. The courtyard will include a bronze plaque dedicating the garden to Charlotte with information about her for visitors.

Family and friends could not think of a better way to remember Charlotte than by dedicating something to her that she cherished most in this world, a beautiful garden.

“When I see this garden I am just so happy to see this in memory of my sister, who we all miss,” said Warren.
