The University of West Georgia Theatre Department presents “Once on This Island,” a heartfelt Tony Award nominated musical, at the Townsend Center Main Stage on Oct. 9 -12 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 12-13 at 2:30 p.m.
“Once On This Island” follows the life of Ti Moune, a young woman who falls in love with Daniel Beauxhomme, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. However, the gods and Moune’s adopted parents, Mama Euralie and Tonton Julian, may have a different story in mind for these young lovers. When Beauxhomme is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
“Once on this Island,” book and lyrics by award winning writer and lyricist Lynn Ahrens and composed by Stephen Flaherty, will take its audience to a world where gods have the final say and true love may not be enough.
A community preview will take place Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at a discounted rate of $3. Tickets for all other performances are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors. For more information, call (678) 839-4722.
