This is a course in which beginning students develop their abilities to clearly communicate, both verbally and visually using relevant design vocabulary, with a strong emphasis on awareness of the conceptual nature of graphic design and discovering personal methodologies that aid in creative visual problem-solving. Beginning typography skills are introduced, developing a fundamental understanding of the its structure, history, technology and application of principles of visual hierarchy, emphasis and organization. Basic computer skills required for further study in graphic design will also be covered where students learn to manage logical professional work flow through the use of Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. Design history research as it relates to each topic is incorporated. Prerequisites: ART 1006, 1007, 1008, 1009, 2201, 2202. Permission of the Instructor. $75.00 lab fee.
