The University of West Georgia invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer with administrative responsibility for coordinating all the academic programs, research, and service activities of the University. The Provost-VPAA is the ranking University official who acts in the absence of the President.
UWG is a comprehensive doctoral institution and a charter member of the University System of Georgia. It offers a range of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and professional programs at the baccalaureate level and above. The 116 programs of study include 59 at the bachelor’s level, 42 at the master’s and specialist levels, three at the doctoral level and 12 at the certificate level. These programs are offered through the College of Arts & Sciences, Richards College of Business, College of Education, School of Nursing, Graduate School, and the Honors College.

Opportunities also exist for exceptional students through the only Honors College in Georgia, and for extraordinary high school juniors and seniors through the Advanced Academy of Georgia.
Recognized as the state's leader in online education, UWG is well-positioned for further growth and development in the 21st century with its Extended Degree Programs. The Office of Extended Degree Programs is responsible for the administration of Distance & Distributed Education (www.westga.edu/~honors/extendeddegrees/, Evening/Weekend University, and the Newnan Center in Newnan, GA. Extended Degree Programs also provides support for other off-campus graduate and undergraduate courses and programs.
Enrollment is approximately 11,500 and growing. The budget is in excess of 120 million dollars and has been steadily increasing reflecting the support of the leadership of the State and the University System. UWG, with its beautifully landscaped 645 wooded acre campus is located in Carrollton, a community of 23,000+ residents. Carrollton, about 45 minutes from Atlanta, is the county seat of Carroll County, and serves a population base of 87,000+. The community has excellent schools and a comprehensive medical center. UWG employees are able to take advantage of a variety of cultural, recreational, community service, and entertainment opportunities in the Carrollton area and the Atlanta metropolitan area (a short driving distance from Carrollton).
Candidates for this position must have:
- an earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree;
- extensive full-time teaching, research, and administrative experience in progressively responsible positions;
- scholarly qualifications sufficient to meet appointment as a professor in one of the institution’s academic departments;
- excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- a strong commitment to quality, academic freedom, diversity, and technological advancement;
- interest in supporting grant writing and other external funding sources;
- ability to work within a shared governance system characterized by consultation and collaboration;
- ability to work cooperatively and effectively with various community and industry constituencies;
- effective problem solving approaches to the challenges facing institutions of higher education.
The Provost-VPAA will be expected to play a major role in strengthening UWG's stature as a robust tier institution and should have the demonstrated ability to maintain collaborative relationships with other divisions of the University.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The starting date is July 1, 2011.
